What is Snellen?

January 22nd, 2009

Snellen Standard

Snellen Standard

Did you know there is no such thing as a “Snellen Letter“? Snellen is not a letter style but a standard named after the Dutch ophthalmologist Herman Snellen who developed the chart in 1862. Sloan Letters are based on the Snellen twenty-five square standard. Each letter takes up approximately 50% black and 50% white of a grid 5 squares wide by 5 squares high.
